Media interview preparation for senior leaders

Media interviews rarely go wrong because leaders don’t know what to say.

They go wrong because of how answers come across under pressure.

At senior level, interviews are often high-stakes - linked to reputation, performance, or moments of scrutiny. Preparation isn’t about scripting answers. It’s about understanding how communication actually works in those situations.

Start with the audience, not the message

A common mistake is to begin with:

“What do I want to say?”

The more useful question is:

“What does the audience need to understand?”

If that’s clear, answers tend to become shorter, more focused and more effective.

Without it, people fill space - explaining, qualifying and drifting away from the point.

Clarity comes from structure

In an interview, clarity is rarely about having more information.

It’s about:

  • answering the question directly

  • structuring the response clearly

  • knowing when to stop

The ability to land a point cleanly matters more than the ability to expand on it.

Prepare for the questions you don’t want

Most preparation focuses on:

  • key messages

  • positive scenarios

In reality, pressure comes from:

  • difficult or unexpected questions

  • shifts in tone

  • follow-ups that challenge your position

Preparing for those moments is what creates confidence.

Understand how interviews actually work

Interviews are not neutral conversations.

They are shaped by:

  • time constraints

  • editorial focus

  • the need for clarity and pace

That means:

  • long answers get cut

  • unclear answers get reframed

  • over-explaining weakens impact

Preparation needs to reflect that reality.

Keep the order right

A simple structure helps:

  1. understand what the audience needs

  2. shape your message accordingly

  3. then focus on delivery

Most people reverse that, and struggle as a result.

Final thought

Good media performance is rarely about saying more.

It’s about saying the right thing, clearly, and at the right moment.
