There’s endless hype around AI in video and podcast production at the moment. Some say it will replace creative professionals altogether; others think it’s nothing more than a gimmick.

The truth sits somewhere in between and that’s where things get interesting.

AI vs. Generative AI: What’s the Difference?

Artificial intelligence has been quietly helping editors for years, think noise reduction, auto-levelling, or transcribing audio.

Generative AI, though, is something new. It can create visuals, sound, and text from scratch. In media production, that means generating B-roll, extending shots, or even building entire virtual scenes.

But just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

How We Actually Use AI

At Digi Media we see AI as a creative assistant, not a replacement for skilled producers.

We only use generative AI when it genuinely adds value, such as:

  • Lengthening or reconstructing a shot that can’t be re-filmed.

  • Generating impossible B-roll to visualise abstract ideas.

  • Animating short clips or motion sequences where filming isn’t practical.

It’s great for experimentation too. Our family’s toy dragon, affectionately known as Genardy, our “office manager” recently starred in an AI-animated adventure that turned my garden into the Masai Mara. It was wonderfully silly, and a great reminder of what these tools can do when used creatively.

What AI Can’t Do

AI is clever, but it still can’t:

  • Understand a brand’s tone or emotional context.

  • Shape a story’s rhythm, tension, or pace.

  • Coach a nervous guest or guide a powerful interview.

  • Deliver the nuance that separates good from unforgettable.

Those things require experience, taste, and human judgment — the core of every story we produce.

Our Approach: AI + Human Craft

We use AI to make production smarter and faster — handling the technical heavy lifting like editing, transcription, and basic cleanup. That frees our team to focus on storytelling, performance, and emotion.
